If you have been keeping track of parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of my World Series of Poker 2025 series, you will know how I performed in the tournament this year. With the event officially over, below are three memorable moments from Sin City.

The other day I got moved to a new table with 4 bbs ITM just after losing a big flip. Two guys besides me having a friendly chat. One of them notices my stack and says:
What are you doing dude? You’ve got 2 big blinds. You need to go all in with any hand.”
I shrug. Next hand I fold. He’s visibly annoyed.
“I told you. Any two cards.”
I shrug again. Next hand I fold and he gets angrier.
“Dude. You have two big blinds.”
“It’s actually four.”
At this point the other guy pipes up and says.
“I think he knows what he’s doing. He’s written books.”
“On what?”
“Poker strategy.”
Angry guy looks at me.
“That true?”
I nod.
He’s not convinced.
“It can’t be the same guy.”
“It is. I have three of them on my Kindle.”
Other guy shows him the author page.
“Can’t be the same guy. Just the same name.”
Eventually the other guy eventually convinces him at which point angry guy announces he’s going to bust me. He busts before me after raising my blind blind and running into a real hand.
The funniest thing I saw all summer
It’s deep in the Main Event. I’m done for the day so I decide to go check out the latest development in the Will Kassouf affair.
The previous day, he’s annoyed a lot of people with his dismissive attitude to one of the longest serving and nicest of the WSOP floor staff, including the indomitable Hayley Hanna. She sashays to the rail with the biggest glass of wine in her hands and eyes him and his stack up.
How much you got Will? Oh no what happened? You had tons of chips on the stream.”
“Bad beats…” (he starts to tell them).
“Oh yes please Will. Tell me all the bad beats, in detail, in sequence, as they happened.”
The Mexican beside the strip club
The first year I went to the WSOP it was in the Rio, and my brother and I were staying in Circus Circus. This was within a distance we considered walkable, so every night ended with us walking up the road that ran parallel to the strip from the Rio to Circus Circus. Every night without fail, several cabs would stop to ask us if we were going to the strip club past the half way point of our walk, and offer to bring us there for free (cab drivers got a kickback from the club when they did so). It wasn’t an unreasonable assumption that that might be the objective of two middle aged guys walking on a road with nothing else of note on it, and they always took some persuading before they let us continue on our walk.
This year, one of my female friends had a habit of hankering for Mexican food and white wine late at night. Her establishment of choice, El Dorado, just so happens to be right next door to the strip club in question. So when I climbed into an uber at two in the morning to head there, he gave me a knowing look.
El Dorado? Yeah, right…”
Nothing I could say would convince him I wasn’t headed for the strip club and using the Mexican as a decoy to avoid problems if my wife looked at my list of destinations. He dropped me in front of the club, from where I scooted into the Mexican where my friend was already waiting.
When I told her the story, she had one of her own. Her uber driver had dropped her at what she quickly realised was the strippers’ entrance to the club.
