Twenty-two former international cricket captains have renewed their appeal to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the health of Imran Khan. A joint letter was sent on 23 August, by the group comprising Indian icons Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, demanding proper medical care for the 73-year-old former prime minister, who is in Adiala Prison.
The former captains urged the government to comply with recent Supreme Court orders and allow an independent medical examination of Khan, particularly regarding reports of vision loss in his right eye.

What the Supreme Court Ordered
Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the government to move Imran Khan to a hospital. The court wanted a special medical board, including his sister Dr Uzma Khan and his personal doctors, to run the checkup. Additionally, the judges restored his weekly family visits.
However, the former captains say the government ignored these rules. Citing security issues, officials took Khan to a state-run hospital for only a few hours instead of the private facility. A government-appointed medical team quickly declared him fit and sent him straight back to Adiala Jail. This state team bypassed the court-ordered independent board entirely before they could complete their work.
What the Captains Are Asking For
The former captains have made three clear requests to the Prime Minister. First, they want the court-directed medical board to complete a full and independent assessment of his health. This assessment must include Imran Khan’s personal physicians. Crucially, they must check the reported loss of vision in his right eye.
Second, they demand that the government honours the weekly family visits without any administrative delays. Third, they ask that the government provides the recommended medical treatment immediately after the assessment.
Previous Appeal in February
This letter marks the second time in six months that international cricket legends have petitioned the Pakistani government. In February, fourteen former captains wrote a similar letter expressing deep concern over Imran Khan’s health.
His family had warned that medical neglect in prison had left him almost completely blind in one eye. While the government denied those claims and insisted that prison doctors provided adequate care, the recent Supreme Court intervention has prompted this renewed appeal.
Imran Khan’s Sporting Background and Medical Condition
Imran Khan played international cricket from the late 1970s until 1992. He captained Pakistan to its only 50-over World Cup victory. He later entered politics and served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 until he was ousted by a parliamentary vote in April 2022. He has been in prison since August 2023 after a series of convictions that he and his supporters say are politically motivated.
