Superbook fined $20,000 by New Jersey regulator for betting violations

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has imposed a $20,000 fine on SBOpco LLC, operator of the Superbook brand, for several sports betting violations – more than a year after the company exited the state’s betting market.

The penalty underscores New Jersey’s ongoing vigilance in enforcing compliance standards, even for operators no longer licensed in the state.

The violations trace back to a February 12, 2022 UFC fight between William Knight and Maxim Grishin. A system display error incorrectly listed Grishin’s odds as +145 instead of Knight’s. Instead of honoring the original bets, Superbook manually switched the wagers to Knight at the same odds. When Grishin won, bettors lost due to the change.

Superbook later asked the DGE to void the bets, but the regulator denied the request and ordered the operator to pay out rightful winnings. The DGE also found that Superbook had accepted wagers on unapproved events, including a 2023 college basketball game featuring New Jersey teams and the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, both prohibited under state rules.

According to the DGE, these actions violated the Sports Wagering Act, which requires operators to ensure market integrity and compliance with approved event lists. Superbook was instructed to settle all pending patron accounts within 48 hours and provide proof of payment.

DGE interim director Mary Jo Flaherty condemned the violations as unacceptable and inconsistent with New Jersey’s gaming policies, emphasizing the regulator’s commitment to maintaining trust in the sports betting system as the market grows more complex.

Superbook had ceased operations in New Jersey in July 2024, simultaneously withdrawing from several other U.S. states amid rising competition and tougher regulatory demands. Despite its exit, the enforcement demonstrates that regulatory accountability continues beyond active licensure.

The fine coincides with a separate case involving Super Group’s DGC subsidiary, operator of Jackpot City and Spin Palace Casino, which agreed to a $112,000 penalty for breaches related to responsible gambling and player protection.
