UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes is stepping down. In a statement on Monday, the regulator revealed that Rhodes will depart the position on April 30, without revealing his future career plans.
Rhodes took over as interim chief in 2021 before being made permanent several months later. The statement lists some of the notable industry changes that occurred during his time at the UKGC, including the Gambling Act white paper, the rollout of a new annual survey looking at gambling behavior in the UK, and, awarding the fourth-ever UK National Lottery license.
Talking about his time with the regulator, Rhodes said that he is “proud of the progress we have made to strengthen regulation” and improve consumer protections. UKGC Interim Chair Charles Counsell thanked Rhodes for leaving a “strong legacy” and wished him well in his future endeavors.

The UKGC will now focus its attention on finding a replacement. Deputy Chief Executive Sarah Gardner will assume the role until a suitable candidate is found. The recruiting process will begin “shortly” according to the UKGC statement.
Betting and Gaming Council CEO Grainne Hurst thanked Rhodes for his service, noting his “professionalism” and “hands-on approach.” She said that she looks forward to “working closely” with Sarah Gardner when she assumes the interim position.
